The doors of a small Schoolhouse nestled under the gaze of the clock tower in the heart of Enniskerry in the ‘garden county’ Wicklow opened in 1818. A school for young children, a house of learning where excited minds explored, examined and recited the rhymes and reasons of the unfolding world. In 2011 the children marched up to the top of the hill to our perfect new school, for another 200 years of erudition!
‘Celebrating 200’ is an acknowledgement of this success.
A steering group was put together to generate energy, enthusiasm and activity around this success. The following is a list of ideas and activities that are in action or will be explored through the year.
Plant a Birch
As part of TETRAPAK plant a tree day, and to launch the 2018 Celebrations a Birch tree was planted in the playground. Some members from 5th and 6th class planted the Birch tree, these students were the last classes in the old school, so it is fitting that they contributed the Birch tree to the new school playground. Birch trees are known for being versatile and flexible and can adapt to their surroundings. They also are one of the oldest trees in Ireland.
A wonderful and appealing generic Christmas card was made from an image taken by a former parent and past pupil of Powerscourt N.S, Ms. Suzanne Clarke. Suzanne captured the old schoolhouse behind the iconic clock tower in the snow of 2009. This card is for sale and the profit made will contribute to the ongoing fundraising required by the Parent Teacher Team in support of the school community. Please contact Hazel if you wish to purchase, the cards will be on sale at various school and parish events and can also be bought in The Village Store in Enniskerry.
1818-2018 Memorial Bench
The children of the senior room are designing, constructing and embellishing a commemorative bench that will sit under a birch tree that was planted in their playground. We hope both the tree and it will last another 200 years!
Celebration Week 14th -20th May, 2018
Within the School grounds and interspersed within the curriculum will be a marriage of today’s learning andan unfolding of the past 200 years. A wonderful photographic exhibition is to be held in the Old Schoolhouse in Enniskerry Village, the Schoolhouse is still being used for education purposes, it is now an art education facility, the original schoolroom is to be set up in its original form. This will be a wonderful project. A family fun day will be held in the church field in front of the new school after a wonderful commemorative service.
